It was either this, or a brick of cheese. Don’t ask.

Today I decided it’d be fun to photograph my small Southern Pacific toy train. I have a special fondness for the now-defunct Southern Pacific railroad – my grandfather used to build and maintain the microwave communications systems for them.

Not far from work is a Fire academy, I think it’s part of the local community college. Out front they have several vehicles that have every appearance of being routinely lit ablaze for the students to practice their skills on. This tanker trailer is attached to an old semi they use for these exercises.

I’m discovering that I really like macro photography. While my particular gear (macro-wise) isn’t the awesome-est, it certainly gets the job done. I gave Gabe this watch the day Karla and I got married, as a reminder that I’ve chosen to love him too, for all time.

This morning I had to put a bit of gas in the van before I drove to work. Fortunately for us there was this vintage bucket fire truck by the filling station, and it just happened to have icicles dangling from it in various fun places, like the gauge cluster similar to what I shot the other day.

I started out going in a completely different direction and wound up taking a fairly straightforward portrait of Gabe using light from the living room window light.

Somehow it feels poetic to take a photo of the old film camera with the new digital. One can argue the merits of each until you’re blue the face, but the Olympus OM line of cameras will always have a special place in my heart as they’re the first cameras I had that really taught me photography.

Yup. Went to Applebees, took a picture of the light. Actually, this was taken completely blind because the camera had to be on the table facing directly up to get the shot.

I couldn’t make up my mind today. Originally I was just going to show you the “Gasboy” photo and make some jokes about how this is the long lost cousin of Optimus Prime (doesn’t the text look just like the transformers titles?), and then mention that my wife thinks this is my self-portrait. But the firetruck pics turned out so well that I thought they need to be co-photos of the day. Enjoy.

The “golden hour” is that time during the morning and evening when the sun is pretty low in the sky, the shadows are long, and the light nice and gentle. Sometimes it’s more obvious than others why it’s called the golden hour…
